Acaí (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) is a one-inch round berry that comes from the acai palm tree, which is native to rainforests of Central and South America. The berries have a deep purple skin, yellow flesh, and a large-sized seed inside. Acaí berries have a slightly sweet-and-earthy flavor that’s often compared to blueberries paired with very dark chocolate.
People native to the Amazon have been using acai berries for their health benefits for many years. They became popular in the United States when the berries were named as a superfood on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The same plant component that gives the acaí berry its deep purple color, anthocyanin, also acts as an antioxidant in the body. Acaí has lots of antioxidants (three times the amount that blueberries offer). Antioxidants may protect your body’s cells from getting damaged by oxidative processes. Their high antioxidant content is one of the reasons the berries have become so popular as a health food.
Acai berries are also full of fiber and contain high levels of important fatty acids such as omega-3, omega-6, and monounsaturated oleic acid. Omega-3 and omega-6 are considered essential for good health, and experts recommend getting a balanced amount of each.
